Recreational Initiatives are team activities at SPTS that are facilitated by our Recreational Initiative Staff, and the team’s primary therapist. Teams are presented with a challenge and are required to utilize teamwork, communication, and problem solving skills to accomplish the challenge. The activity continues until the team is successful in some aspect. Afterwards the team will discuss what happened, evaluate their performance, process any issues that surfaced, and draw parallels between this experience, and real life experiences.
Shortly after arriving at SPTS, staff meets with the newly admitted student and conducts a comprehensive recreational assessment. Information gathered during this process is incorporated into the student’s treatment plan and recreational activities are specifically designed to meet identified therapeutic objectives and goals. Each student participates in therapeutic recreation or recreational therapy at least three times a week. Students also participate in structured daily recreational activities.
